David Paratore
President and Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Paratore has more than 15 years of progressive experience in the general management, operations and business development arenas for products ranging from superconductor wire to aircraft engines. Prior to joining NanoSteel, Mr. Paratore was president and COO of American Superconductor (AMSC) after having served as the general manager for each of AMSC’s three divisions. Before AMSC, Mr. Paratore was an account executive for Growth Consulting focused on the implementation of Lean Manufacturing principles within medium sized industrial companies. Initially, Mr. Paratore held positions of increasing responsibility with United Technologies - Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Engines in the areas of business development and operations management, culminating in the general manager role of a business startup. Mr. Paratore’s successes include the achievement of profitability for two businesses - a high technology electric motor business and a power electronics business - and the creation of a jet engine overhaul business. He has served as a member of the Industrial Advisory Council for Florida State University’s Center for Advanced Power Systems (FSU-CAPS) and the Dean’s Advisory Council for the UMass Amherst College of Engineering. He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from UMass Amherst and his M.B.A. from Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute. Mr. Paratore is an avid cyclist and hiker.
 
Dr. Daniel Branagan
Chief Technical Officer

Dr. Branagan is a founder of NanoSteel. He led the team at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) that developed Super Hard Steel® (SHS). Dr. Branagan earned his Ph.D. in metallurgy from Iowa State University. Prior to joining NanoSteel as a founder in 2002, Dr. Branagan was a research scientist at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). Dr. Branagan has won numerous awards for his accomplishments, including: 2009 R&D 100 Award for Development of “Hardmetal Alternative Wear Plate Technology: Super Hard Steel Wear Plate” 2007 R&D 100 Award for Development of “Hardmetal Alternative Technology” INL Lifetime Achievement Award for Inventorship, Idaho Falls National Laboratory USDOE, 2005; Professional Progress in Energy Award from Iowa State University, 2005; Federal Laboratory Consortium Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer awarded at the Mission Driven Partnerships National Meeting in Orlando, 2005; R&D 100 Award for developing “Revolutionary Nanocomposite Coatings For High Performance Industrial Applications From Low-Cost Wire Feedstock,” 2004; World Technology Award Nominee and delegate to World Technology Summit, 2003; Outstanding Young Alumni Award at Michigan Technological University, 2003; TR100 Award for selection by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) as one of the top 100 innovators under age 35 in the world, 2002; R&D 100 Award for Development of “Super Hard Steel Coatings,” 2001; TMS (The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society) Young Leader Award in the Electronic, Magnetic and Photonic Materials Division, 2000; Top Performance Award, Lockheed Martin Idaho Technologies, 1999; “Great Advances in Scientific Discovery” nominated by The Science Coalition and presented to the 105th Congress for research on rare earth permanent magnets, 1998; Top Performance Award, Lockheed Martin Idaho Technologies in 1998; R&D 100 Award for Development of “Nanocrystalline Composite Coercive Magnet Powder,” 1997; and BES (Basic Energy Science) Materials Sciences Award for “Significant Implication For Department of Energy Related Technologies,” 1996. Dr. Branagan holds 10 granted patents in materials and has been published in more than 50 refereed publications. Dr. Branagan has consistently distinguished himself as the leader in the field of developing nanoscale microstructures in bulk materials and amorphous metallic glass formation. His work in this area began with his patented Ph.D. thesis work in designing high energy density nanoscale permanent magnet materials and continued through the patented development of rare earth neutron absorbing materials that could be formed into metallic glasses. Dr. Branagan was recognized in the 2002 Forbes Special Anniversary Big Ideas Issue as “one of the important innovators of our time, one of 15 people who will reinvent the future” and selected by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) as one of the top 100 “brilliant young innovators” in the world whose work will have “a deep impact on how we live, work, and think in the century to come”.
 
Tom Santos
Vice President - Operations

Mr. Santos directs NanoSteel’s product sourcing and quality assurance activities from NanoSteel’s corporate headquarters in Rhode Island. Prior to joining NanoSteel, Mr. Santos was with American Superconductor where he was most recently operations manager at the company’s production facility in Devens, Massachusetts. Prior to joining American Superconductor in 1991, Mr. Santos held several positions in the engineering microelectronics division of GTE Government Services in Needham, Massachusetts. From 1984 to 1988, Mr. Santos served aboard the USS South Carolina in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Santos received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Northeastern University in Boston in 1998 and an Executive Masters in Business Administration from Suffolk University in Boston in 2006.
 
Robert C. Marini Jr.
Vice President - Finance

Mr. Marini has more than 20 years of experience in financial and strategic management within the high tech and manufacturing industries. Before joining NanoSteel in 2006, he was CFO at several high tech start-ups including Viridien Technologies and CFS, Inc. Prior to that, Mr. Marini was Director of Finance for the Pacific Rim and Latin America at Instron Corporation. In addition, he has held financial positions of increasing responsibility for Nuclear Metals, Inc. and the Raytheon Company. Mr. Marini received a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Management from Northeastern University, as well as a Masters in Business Administration in financial management, accounting and operations from the Northeastern University Graduate School of Business Administration. He also served as the Vice-Chairman of the National Council for Northeastern University. Mr. Marini is an active member of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) and Financial Executives International (FEI).
