Problem: Abrasion, Corrosion and Impact
The Stellar Wind is an 85-foot Ice Class C tugboat assisting ships and barges in the largest port of the upper Cook Inlet near Anchorage, Alaska.
During the winter, the tugboat encounters severe sliding abrasion, corrosion and impact from saltwater ice, glacial ice loaded with rocks and sediments, beach ice and freshwater ice from river and stream runoff. According to the tugboat captain, the worst of this is beach ice, which forms as waves from 30-foot tides deposit layer upon layer of sand, silt and other abrasive debris.
Solution: NanoSteel Thermal Spray Coating
A 3’ x 3’ wear plate with a NanoSteel SHS 7570 TWAS thermal spray coating was installed at the water line on the port bow of the tugboat hull. The NanoSteel coated wear plate was installed in this location on the bow because of the high wear rate. |

Result: NanoSteel Coating Resists Corrosion, Abrasion and Impact
After two winters of severe sliding abrasion and impact with ice, the NanoSteel SHS 7570 TWAS coating only had several small areas of surface damage from severe impacts with docks and barges. Although the above images show how corrosion and rust from the unprotected steel hull and wear plate substrate had bled onto the surface of the NanoSteel coating in several places, the NanoSteel SHS 7570 TWAS coating showed no signs of corrosion. |
