SHS 7214 is a medium hardness, extremely high toughness hardfacing alloy designed to produce weld deposits with minimal cracking/cross checking on plain carbon or alloy steels. The unique lath eutectoid microconstituent matrix of SHS 7214, consisting of alternating near nanoscale (400 nm length scale) laths of ductile iron and borocarbide phases, is especially effective at minimizing crack initiation and propagation, allowing for high toughness and the ability to take severe impact. SHS 7214 is also designed for applications where metal-to-metal friction and wear is likely, having exceptional resistance to galling at high loads with a low coefficient of friction. SHS 7214 can also be used for rebuilding worn components, where it can be built up to a high thickness.
High Crack Resistance
SHS 7214 is specifically designed so that its thermal expansion (CTE) matches engineering grade steels over a wide temperature range. In the figure to the right, thermal expansion is shown for an AISI 4000 series steel plate and SHS 7214. The figure shows an almost perfect match of thermal expansion over a wide temperature range. This allows SHS 7214 to be welded with minimal cracking/cross checking without significant preheat (i.e. 600°F) since residual stresses that occur during cooling are minimized.
Wear Resistance
ASTM G65-04 dry sand/rubber wheel abrasion test results for SHS 7214 are exceptional for deposits with minimal cracking/cross checking and superior to existing cobalt based Stellite™ alloys. Third-party testing confirms that SHS 7214 exhibits exceptional galling resistance equivalent or superior to cobalt based Stellite™ materials. The combination of hardness, wear resistance and minimal cracking/cross checking of SHS 7214 is superior to competitive materials.
High Deposition Build Up
Due to its close match of thermal expansion characteristic and inherently ductile microstructure, SHS 7214 performs exceptionally well in multiple pass welds. Ability to build up to at least 1’ is possible, which allows repairing and rebuilding of worn industrial parts and components such as hammer mills, forging dies and molds.
