Nanoscale Microstructures Enhance Properties

SHS Forms Nano-Sized Grains
Tensile strengths of SHS materials measure up to 6.2 GPa, which is 47% of theoretical limits.
Glass Devitrification Produces Nanostructures
NanoSteel uses a solid-state processing route called glass devitrification to produce thermal spray coatings with nanoscale (1-100 nm) microstructures and weld overlays with near nanoscale(≤400 nm) microstructures that can be processed into bulk structures for large scale industrial use.

The glass forming nature of the material allows cooling below the melting point. Subsequent transformation occurs where diffusion is limited and the driving force is extremely high. Once nucleation begins, a large number of grains form simultaneously at many points, limiting time for grain growth and minimizing grain size to a nanoscale.
